Mariah Carey reflects on making peace with mother before her death – Music News

Mariah Carey has revealed she made peace with her mother Patricia Carey prior to her death last year.

During an interview for CBS Mornings on Wednesday, the music superstar reflected on the passing of her opera singer mother, Patricia Carey, who died in August 2024 at the age of 87.

“I don’t know how I processed it. I just know that it was extremely difficult for me to navigate,” she told host Gayle King. “It was tough because I have always had an interesting relationship with my mother.”

Despite their ups and downs over the years, Mariah recalled how she stayed by Patricia’s side towards the end.

“It hasn’t been easy. But towards the end, I was with her the whole time. So, I feel better about that. But it was tough,” the 56-year-old shared, adding that she feels as if she and her mum had made peace with each other. “I do. She said a couple of things to me that were very healing for what I needed. And I felt that that was the right thing to do.”

In addition, Mariah discussed the death of her older sister, Alison Carey. Alison passed away at the age of 63 on the same day as their mother.

“My sister, I hadn’t seen in years, and I feel really badly about that as well,” she noted. “But that’s ’cause I tend to have a guilt complex about everything. But it’s tough. My sister had an extremely hard life.”

Elsewhere in the chat, Mariah opened up about collaborating with Anderson .Paak on several tracks on her new album, Here for It All.

“I reached out to him. He’s brilliant. He’s really a great artist,” she smiled.

However, Mariah denied she is dating the singer-producer, insisting they are simply good friends even though they have often been photographed holding hands.

“He just likes to hold my hand. He just grabs my hand. I don’t know what he’s doing,” the Believe hitmaker teased, calling their bond “the handholding club”.

Mariah is set to release Here for It All, her sixteenth studio album, on Friday.
