D’Angelo Laid To Rest At Star-Studded Funeral In Virginia

D’Angelo‘s life and legacy was celebrated at a private funeral service in Virginia this past weekend.

The legendary singer, who passed away at the age of 51 due to pancreatic cancer, was laid to rest on Saturday (November 1) at Saint Paul’s Baptist Church in his birthplace of Richmond.

According to the order of service, images of which surfaced online, the funeral featured tribute performances from Stevie Wonder as well as D’Angelo’s former bands The Soultronics and The Vanguard.

The Soultronics, which supported D’Angelo on his Voodoo Tour in the early 2000s, included the likes of Questlove, James Poyser and Pino Palladino, while The Vanguard is credited on D’s final album, 2014’s Black Messiah.

Bishop Ralland V. Robinson conducted the service, while Pastor Jamal Bryant appeared in a special video tribute. Attendees included Lauryn Hill, DJ Premier, John Mayer and H.E.R., among many more.

The order of service also gave a special thanks to some of D’Angelo’s close friends and collaborators such as Questlove and Q-Tip.

“We wish to express our profound gratitude for the overwhelming outpouring of support,” his family wrote in the program. “Through music, love and light, Michael D’Angelo Archer’s spirit will shine forever.”

According to Okayplayer, a public memorial for D’Angelo is planned for 2026, although further details have yet to be announced.

D’Angelo’s sudden death on October 14 sent shockwaves throughout the music industry, leading to an outpouring of tributes from Beyoncé, Lauryn Hill, Barack Obama, Missy Elliott, Jamie Foxx, Tyler, The Creator, RZA, Yasiin Bey and many others.

In a statement at the time, the singer’s family said: “The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life … We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind.

“We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”
