Chappell Roan backtracks over tribute to Brigitte Bardot – Music News

Chappell Roan has retracted a tribute she wrote in honour of the late Brigitte Bardot.

On Sunday, a spokesperson announced that the iconic French actress had died at her home in Saint-Tropez. She was 91.

Following the news, Chappell – real name Kayleigh Amstutz – took to her Instagram Stories to post a photo of the And God Created Woman star.

“She was my inspiration for Red Wine Supernova. Rest in peace Ms. Bardot,” the singer-songwriter shared in the caption.

Chappell namechecks Bardot in the first verse of her 2023 song Red Wine Supernova.

However, the Pink Pony Club hitmaker returned to her account a few hours later to clarify her stance on the late actress.

“Holy s**t i did not know all that insane s**t Ms. Bardot stood for obvs I do not condone this (sic),” the 27-year-old declared, deleting her original message.

While Bardot rose to fame as a sex symbol and animal rights activist, having created The Brigitte Bardot Foundation in 1986, she also sparked debate in her homeland with her controversial social views.

Over the years, the actress was fined twice for public insults and five times for inciting racial hatred against Muslims.

Bardot’s fourth husband, Bernard d’Ormale, also once served as an advisor to the far-right politician Jean-Marie Le Pen.

Last October, Bardot was reported to have undergone surgery for a “serious illness” but was recovering at home. A cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

Bardot is survived by a son, Nicolas-Jacques Charrier.
