Indian music streaming platform JioSaavn surpasses 500 million Google Play downloads, marking a major milestone for the company.
JioSaavn, an online music streaming platform from Mumbai-headquartered Reliance Industries, recently surpassed 500 million downloads on the Google Play Store. The milestone is a significant one for the company, whose strongest competitors include industry heavyweights Spotify and Apple Music. Further, the milestone makes JioSaavn the second-most downloaded entertainment app in India.
The company attributed its success this year to consistent product innovation, a focus on the user experience, and a series of “high-impact” feature launches that accelerated engagement across regions. In the past year, the service has introduced major updates to strengthen personalized recommendations and enhance multilingual search. The platform also recently unveiled a redesigned home feed, which has been well received by new and longtime users alike.
The platform is known as one of the most affordable music streaming services in India. JioSaavn offers a free tier as well as a Pro subscription. Users can purchase JioSaavn Pro for Rs 89 per month ($6.99), or Rs 749 per year ($59.99); daily and weekly plans are also available.
JioSaavn also enables users to set caller tunes for phone numbers via JioTunes. JioSaavn customers can access JioTunes for free from the MyJio app. JioHotstar, another app owned by Reliance Industries, recently hit the 1 billion downloads milestone—making the video streaming platform the most downloaded entertainment app in India.
But despite the company’s recent milestones, its streaming foothold is in a precarious position. Its free users far outnumber its paying customers, which could spell long-term trouble for the platform. Nevertheless, the achievement is a major one for a platform elbowing with the likes of Spotify and Apple Music. It also makes JioSaavn the only Indian music streaming app to reach such a scale.
Together, JioSaavn and JioHotstar mark the increasing dominance of the Jio brand (and Reliance Industries) as a digital ecosystem across content and entertainment categories. Now, the company prepares to enters its next phase of expansion, having “reaffirmed its commitment to elevating the listening experience” through product innovation and strategic collaborations. The platform also aims to build on its strong growth trajectory and expand its reach to audiences beyond India.
